“Sugar”

A feature-length film about theatre

“If only you had a idea what sort of trash verse might grow out of…” (Anna Akhmatova)

This is the first film in my career of an art director. It’s a full-length film narrating a complex story of the first rehearsal. The director and a team of actors meet to stage a performance based on the play “Sugar” written by a contemporary playwright Ivan Vyrypayev. While they are rehearsing they prove to be people of different views, outlook and attitude to art. The action is set one day and the location is the building of the theatre. The troop starts with the hope for some inspiring experience and ends up with the offence and physical abuse which turn to crash the director’s personality. The overlapping line is formed by the imaginary scenes of the “Sugar” performance. The performance which will never be staged.
